​POSITION SUMMARY

Modern Men seeks an experienced and visionary Artistic Director to provide creative leadership and ensure the continued artistic excellence of the chorus. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Artistic Director is responsible for overall artistic planning, repertoire selection, rehearsal preparation, and performance quality. The ideal candidate will be an inspiring conductor who can motivate a large volunteer ensemble, collaborate effectively with organizational leadership, and engage audiences through innovative programming.

ABOUT MODERN MEN CHORUS

Modern Men is a large, auditioned men’s chorus based in Palm Springs, California. With more than 150 members, the chorus presents dynamic, high-quality performances featuring diverse repertoire, from classical masterworks to Broadway, jazz, and contemporary works. Modern Men is proud to be part of the American LGBTQ+ choral tradition and the GALA Choruses movement, committed to artistic excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

• Lead all rehearsals and performances of the chorus.

• Select repertoire that reflects both the mission and artistic vision of the organization.

• Plan and implement rehearsal schedules, concert programs, and performance logistics.

• Collaborate with staff, accompanists, and guest artists to ensure high-quality productions.

• Teach and inspire singers of varying skill levels, fostering vocal and musical excellence.

• Conduct auditions for new singers and soloists in a compassionate and effective manner.

• Oversee the preparation and distribution of rehearsal materials, including sheet music, digital practice tracks, and other learning tools.

• Represent the chorus in the community, supporting outreach, fundraising, and public relations initiatives.

• Work in partnership with the Board of Directors and elected leadership to support organizational planning and operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated experience conducting large choral ensembles (50+ members).

• University degree in music performance, conducting, or education, or equivalent experience.

• Extensive knowledge/experience of choral repertoire for TTBB voices across multiple genres.

• Proficiency in conducting techniques, including experience working with instrumentalists.

• Ability to read and interpret full scores.

• Strong rehearsal planning and organizational skills.

• Experience in teaching and motivating volunteer singers with diverse musical backgrounds.

• Collaborative leadership style and excellent communication skills.

• Competence with electronic communications and productivity tools (email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.).

• Successful candidate will have their primary residence in the Coachella Valley region ofRiverside County, California.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Skills in vocal technique and production.

• Piano/keyboard proficiency.

• Comfort with public speaking, fundraising, and community engagement.

• Familiarity with music software and digital tools.

• Knowledge of the American LGBTQ+ choral tradition and the GALA Choruses movement.

• Experience leading a musical organization through growth and stabilization.

COMPENSATION

This is a part-time, contracted position; compensation will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
